What began as a fun-filled summer at Camp Mystic, a cherished all-girls camp in the Texas Hill Country, has ended in unimaginable heartbreak. Janie Hunt, a young camper who went missing during this week’s catastrophic flooding, was tragically found deceased on Saturday afternoon, officials confirm.
The devastating news has shaken the community, especially those closest to Janie — a bright, joyful, and deeply loved young girl whose life was cut far too short.
According to early reports, heavy rains caused nearby waters to rise rapidly late Friday evening. During the chaos and emergency evacuations, Janie was reported missing. Rescue teams — including local authorities, volunteers, and emergency responders — searched tirelessly for hours. Hope remained high into Saturday morning.
But by Saturday afternoon, Janie’s body was discovered downstream, marking a tragic end to the search and a heartbreaking blow to all who knew and loved her.
The Hunt family is now mourning their unimaginable loss, surrounded by relatives and community members who are doing their best to offer support in the face of such sorrow.
A family spokesperson shared:
“Our hearts are broken beyond words. Janie was the light in every room she entered. We are grateful for every moment we had with her and overwhelmed by the support from our community during this devastating time.”
Tavia Hunt, a close family member and wife of Kansas City Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt, also posted a deeply emotional tribute earlier this week, calling Janie her “precious little cousin” and questioning how tragedies like this could happen — especially to a child.
“Even in our grief, we cling to our faith. We believe Janie is now in heaven, held in God’s arms,” Tavia shared.
Messages of condolence and prayer have poured in from across the country, including from families with children at Camp Mystic, fellow members of the Chiefs organization, and the broader Texas and Christian communities.
“We may never understand why, but we trust that her spirit will continue to shine,” one family friend wrote.
As the Hunt family navigates this unimaginable loss, they ask for continued prayers, privacy, and support in the coming days. Plans for a memorial service will be shared once the family is ready.
Rest in peace, sweet Janie Hunt. Your light was brief but beautiful. You will never be forgotten. 💔
