Firefighter Dave Tysdal in Stable Condition After Surviving Coeur d’Alene Ambush

COEUR D’ALENE, IDAHO – A wave of relief and hope has swept across the Coeur d’Alene community as firefighter Dave Tysdal, who was critically injured in a shocking ambush shooting, has been upgraded to stable condition.

Tysdal, a seasoned firefighter and engineer with years of service, had been in critical condition following the violent incident that left multiple emergency responders wounded. After days on a ventilator, the community now celebrates the encouraging news: he is awake, alert, and speaking.

The ambush, which authorities described as a “targeted and calculated attack”, stunned the small Idaho city and sent shockwaves through first responder networks across the country. The Coeur d’Alene Fire Department confirmed Tysdal had sustained life-threatening injuries during the attack but never stopped fighting for his life.

“Dave is a fighter in every sense of the word,” said Fire Chief Brian Clegg. “His recovery is a testament to his strength, the incredible care he’s received, and the overwhelming support from the community.”

Since the incident, hundreds have gathered in vigils and donated to support Tysdal’s family through fundraisers and meal trains. Colleagues describe him as a dedicated public servant, family man, and mentor to many young firefighters.

While he remains in the intensive care unit, the removal of the ventilator and his ability to communicate mark a turning point in what has been a harrowing journey.

Law enforcement continues to investigate the motive behind the ambush, and charges against the suspect are pending. Meanwhile, the city is focused on healing — and celebrating small victories like Dave’s first words after waking.

“This community has wrapped its arms around us,” said a family spokesperson. “We’re not out of the woods yet, but today, we are filled with gratitude.”
